And trust me, nothing hits the spot like a well-made thali, a spiced sabudana khichadi, or that humble yet fiery thecha. Let me take you to three spots that completely stole my heart (and appetite)! 🥇 Aaswad – Dadar This place is iconic — and the moment you walk in, you know you're somewhere special. I started with their Pola Kala Batni Misal (INR 98/-) — a unique take on the classic, with a rustic punch that had just the right amount of heat. Their Thalipeeth (INR 67/-), served with a side of creamy white butter, was beautifully crisp, nutty, and hearty. But the soul-satisfying combo was definitely Pithale Bhakri (INR 98/-) with Barli Vangi (INR 74/-)( stuffed baby brinjals) and a fiery dollop of Thecha chutney — it was like a festival on a plate. I washed it all down with a tall glass of Piyush (INR 67/-) — sweet, creamy, and pure nostalgia. 🥈 Jeevan Restaurant – Ville Parle What a hidden gem! Jeevan is all about heartwarming, home-style meals. I tried both the Swad Maharashtracha Thali (INR 300/-)and the Gavran Thali (INR 250/-), and honestly, each bite felt like a hug from a Maharashtrian ajji (grandma). Fresh phulkas, spicy gravies, that hint of jaggery — it’s the kind of meal you don’t rush. The Gavran Thali especially stood out with its bold village-style flavors. It’s a must if you love a real desi spread. 🥉 Prakash Shakahari Upahar Kendra – Dadar Stepping into Prakash feels like stepping back in time — in the best way. I started with the classic Dalimbi Usal (INR 75/-) — creamy, subtly spiced, and ridiculously comforting. Then came the Sabudana Khichadi (INR 65/-) — light, fluffy, and absolutely on point (a rare feat). But the surprise highlight? Their legendary Tikhat Sheera (INR 43/-) — sweet, spicy, and utterly addictive. I’d never had sheera like this before! And of course, the zesty Awla Juice (INR 33/-) was the perfect palate cleanser. These three spots aren’t just restaurants — they’re cultural pit stops, each serving up a slice of Maharashtrian heritage on every plate. So next time you’re in Mumbai, don’t just eat... experience. Hungry already? You’re not alone. 😄 1.
