Tucked between St Ives and Hayle, this tiny settlement offers sand-swept lanes, ancient churches, and glimpses of the sea beyond the dunes. With the South West Coast Path just skimming its edge, Lelant is all sun-bleached stone, rustling marram grass, and timeless maritime charm. 🕰️ Highlights, History & Local Lore Lelant’s roots run deep. Once a thriving medieval port before the estuary silted up, the village played a key role in Cornwall’s tin trade. The Church of St Uny, standing watch over Porth Kidney Sands, dates back to the 12th century. Built with granite from nearby Carnsew, it’s dedicated to a mysterious Welsh missionary and still marks the start of many a pilgrim’s journey. Legend says the churchyard was once linked to buried treasure—possibly smuggled gold—and some locals still whisper about ghostly lights flickering among the graves on stormy nights. The wind here seems to carry stories, if you’re quiet enough to listen. The nearby dunes hide remnants of Lelant’s lost harbour, now overtaken by reed beds and shifting sands. Once bustling with ships, the estuary now teems with waders and wildfowl, making it a haven for birdwatchers, painters, and peace-seekers alike. The Cornish name Lannanta hints at sacred origins, possibly linked to an early monastic settlement. And the views? Expect sweeping sights over St Ives Bay, with Godrevy Lighthouse winking across the water like a beacon from another time. You might even spot the tiny train rolling past on the St Ives Bay Line—one of Britain’s most scenic coastal railways. Today, Lelant is a place of calm – a quiet coastal stop with the hum of the past still faintly audible in the sea breeze. A perfect place to drift, and to walk with no particular hurry at all. 📍 Walk Starting Point (What3Words): ///redefined.flock.found 🗺️ Full Map of All Walks, Drives, and My Ever-Growing To-Do List: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/1/edi... 📽️ Walk Stats • Walk #272 • Time: 2:30pm – 24th April 2025, English Spring • Difficulty: ⭐ 1 / 5 • Beauty: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5 / 5 • Steps: 5,667 • Distance: 3.16 Miles / 5.08 km • Weather: A nice day!
