Exploring Croom WMA. On a nice slightly overcast day we ventured up to a place we have never been before. It’s been on the list for a few years and just never made it. Today that all changed. Croom has a reputation for being pretty wet. I have seen videos of what looks like a swamp drive through tire deep water. We met at McDonalds near 50 and 75 for a quick breakfast and then headed west towards the coast. A couple of miles and we pulled off the hwy and started our adventure. What we found was a cross between Richloam and Citrus. The time of year was good, not overly wet, but not all dusty either. Five jeeps from a stock JK with a worn front driveshaft, to a Rubicon fully built with 35s. We took the 2007 Red Jeep and were the only ones who needed to be recovered. I had backed into a water hole to see how deep it was and sunk my rear into 32” of water. Hung up on the diffs I could move but not out. A quick pull with a Kinetic rope and we were free. What did we see? Slight elevation changes. Clear trails. A Juvenile Coachwhip snake. A few fence swifts. A Gopher tortoise. Mud, puddles, and plenty of trails. We also stopped at a clay pit to talk about what they are for and why we don’t drive in them. It can be a high priced ticket. It also was well ,arked with signs that said NO VEHICLES. About a 20 mile ride on a perfect Florida day. Take a buddy with you so you can try your hand at some of the water holes, but make sure you have your recovery gear.
