A. Dennis Brown - A Little Bit More / Ranking Trevor - More Loving B. Joe Gibbs & The Professionals - Love Dub Label: Joe Gibbs Music - JGML 8151 This edition of Double 12" Spin pays tribute to two legendary reggae artists who were tragically taken from us too soon. The first 12" single features Dennis Brown, affectionately known as the Crown Prince of Reggae. Brown's exceptional career began at a tender age, with his early recordings for Studio One culminating in the release of two albums. He subsequently collaborated with renowned producers such as Joe Gibbs and Niney The Observer. Brown embarked on a prolific period, releasing a multitude of hit songs and critically acclaimed albums. He collaborated extensively with virtually every major producer in both Jamaica and the UK. Brown's versatility as an artist was evident in his ability to seamlessly transition between roots reggae and lovers rock. His untimely passing in 1999 marked a significant loss for the reggae community. In 2016, the album We Remember Dennis Brown (Tribute) was released, showcasing the enduring impact of his music through performances by various artists who covered his songs. This 12" single was released in 1982, a year after Dennis Brown signed an international record deal with A&M Records. While this partnership did not yield the expected results, the following year proved to be a turning point in Dennis Brown's career with the release of the iconic songs Revolution and Promised Land. The song A Little Bit More was a significant hit for Dennis Brown. The deejay version of the track features Ranking Trevor, a prominent figure in the Jamaican music scene since the mid-1970s. His hits Cave Man Skank and Three Piece Chicken and Chips, released in 1977, solidified his reputation. Trevor's career continued to flourish with releases for Channel One and Joe Gibbs until the mid-1980s, after which he gradually faded from the public eye. Tragically, he passed away in a motorcycle accident in 2012. It's worth noting that the B-side of the 12" single is incorrectly listed as an instrumental version. In reality, it features a repeat of Ranking Trevor's deejay performance. The 12” single was produced by the renowned producer Joe Gibbs, who, in partnership with Errol Thompson, established the acclaimed production duo known as The Mighty Two. Their extensive collaboration yielded a significant body of impactful music that remains popular and is frequently re-released. A. Sugar Minott - Every Little Thing B. Captain Simbad - Dem Run To Babylon Label: Niagara - NIADD 102 The second 12" single is from 1979 and features Sugar Minott, a highly regarded reggae artist who tragically passed away too soon. In the late 1960s, Minott was a member of the vocal group African Brothers, alongside Tony Tuff and others. The group recorded the classic No Cup No Broke for Studio One in 1974, before disbanding shortly after. Minott then embarked on a solo career with Coxsone Dodd, releasing several singles and albums. Known for his innovative approach, he often utilized classic Studio One riddims for his songs, helping to revitalize the label's popularity. In 1979, he left Studio One to establish his own label, Black Roots, and the associated sound system and youth organization, Youth Promotion. The success of his international hit Good Thing Going enabled him to invest in the growth of Youth Promotion. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Minott released a vast number of albums and singles, demonstrating his versatility as both a roots and lovers rock artist. He collaborated with renowned labels such as Channel One, Taxi, Jammy's and Wackies, further solidifying his position in the reggae music scene. However, his career declined in the 1990s, and he passed away from heart problems in 2010. This 12" single features a captivating deejay version of Sugar Minott's song, performed by Captain Sinbad (here incorrectly spelled as Simbad), also known as Carl Dwyer. Captain Sinbad gained significant recognition for his 1982 album The Seven Voyages of Captain Sinbad, released on Greensleeves Records. After spending time in the UK working with the Saxon sound system, he established his own label in Jamaica. Over time, his focus shifted towards production, including hip-hop remixes featured on albums like Sin Badda Than Them and Gangster. In 2012, he surprised fans with the release of another album on Frenchie's Maximum Sound label. The 12" single was produced by Martin "Mandingo" Williams, a singer who was formerly a member of the rocksteady group The Jamaicans. The platter was released by the British reggae label Niagara Records, which operated from 1979 to 1980 as part of D-Roy Records. [All tracks were ripped straight from vinyl using SoundForge. They’re in high-quality WAV format (24-bit/96kHz). I used a Technics SL-1210MK2 turntable with an Ortofon cartridge.] © 2024 Teacher@ReggaeVibes
