2/26/2026 – 2 Samuel 11: 1-5 In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel. And they ravaged the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem. 2 It happened, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king's house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful. 3 And David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, “Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” 4 So David sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and he lay with her. (Now she had been purifying herself from her uncleanness.) Then she returned to her house. 5 And the woman conceived, and she sent and told David, “I am pregnant.” Hello everyone. For those of you who do not know the rest of the story, I will summarize, but I suggest reading the entire chapter from 2 Samuel. After finding out that Bathsheba is pregnant, David sends a message to Joab asking to send Uriah home. Uriah comes back, and David acts as if he is simply wanting a report of how the war is going. Uriah talks to David about the war, then David sends Uriah home, but Uriah does not go home, which ruins David’s plan for cover up. David was expecting Uriah to go home and make love to his wife, Bathsheba. Then David and Bathsheba could claim that the baby belonged to Uriah. So the second night of Uriah’s stay, David invites him to dinner and gets him drunk hoping that he will go home and make love to his wife. Uriah does not go home; he sleeps at the gate again. Uriah can’t justify being able to spend time with his wife when others are stuck in battle. Uriah wants to go back and get the job done. David sends Uriah back with a note for Joab to put Uriah on the front lines so that he will be killed in battle. It works. Uriah dies in battle. What’s worse, the crime or the cover up? This story is difficult to discuss in this setting, but I wanted to talk about it, because it mirrors a lot of what we see happening today. When we make mistakes and try to fix things, our way instead of God’s way, we often get into more trouble. I confess, I’m guilty of trying to fix things my way, instead of repenting and looking for God’s guidance in His word. David was the best king the Israelites had. He was a man after God’s own heart. I would argue that we could start at the present time with present day Israel and go back through all of the leaders, all the way to Joshua who led the Israelites through the promise land to establish the kingdom – I would say that David is still the best king, the best president, the best leader that the Israelite nation has had. Yet, even the best are sinners. We’ll see David get convicted by Nathan, the prophet, in the following chapters and come to repentance. This is a tragedy. How can someone recover from such a scandal? Well, out of this relationship that started as infidelity will come Solomon. God didn’t want David to have this affair, but through God’s providence, God will use these circumstances for the good of His people. My takeaways from this chapter: 1. First, David got soft. He should have been out fighting with his men, but instead, he wanted to take it easy. Where am I getting soft? 2. No one is perfect. No one is righteous. We all need the mercy, grace, forgiveness, and love of God. 3. We need to recognize sin, without judgment. We should get into the word with one another so that we understand when we are off of God’s path and need correction. 4. When we recognize sin, we should repent – to each other and to God. 5. We should forgive each other and accept God’s forgiveness that He gives us through Jesus’ death on the cross. Lord, thank You for this day. Please, help me to recognize my sin and where I am off Your path, so that I can repent and live into Your intention for my life. Amen.
