We spent a brutally cold winter day in the Finger Lakes searching for snowy owls and short-eared owls — with wind chills as low as -15°F. Winter in upstate New York doesn’t exactly invite you outside — especially when the wind chill drops below zero. But some days feel worth showing up for anyway. This was one of those days. We visited two locations in the Finger Lakes where snowy owls and short-eared owls are sometimes spotted in winter — knowing full well we might not see anything at all.
