Winter finally arrived in Nova Scotia with two solid dumpings of snow and a third on the way. I didn’t want to venture too far, nor did I want the added effort of breaking trail through thick, untouched snow. Instead, I set out to photograph a local lone tree, well, one I could make a lone tree by isolating it with a longer focal-length lens. The spot was only minutes from my house, and the skies above were crystal clear. The forecast called for clouds rolling in well before sunset… but forecasts have been known to lie. Sunset came with not a cloud in sight as a near-full moon began to rise. I waited for peak colour, quietly watching the light change, isolating the tree for a series of simple, minimalist images. I returned later to photograph it again at night, giving the scene an entirely different mood, with the moonlight glistening across the snowy foreground. I tried for a sunrise shoot the next morning, but the clouds moved in ahead of the next storm. That system came and went as more of a blizzard than anything else, though it did give me another opportunity to return. This time creating a set of stark black-and-white images. As classic as a lone tree in a field may be, a longer focal length can transform a familiar subject into something far more striking. I’ll share an update in a future video if I manage to capture a sunrise from the opposite side. 0:00 - Intro 1:22 - Checking out the other side 2:44 - My composition 5:10 - Talking about KP 8 Northern Lights 7:00 - More Minimilist 8:53 - Night Shoot 9::45 - Next Day 11:40 - Outro SAY HI ON SOCIAL! instagram.com/chirskellyphotography9 Facebook/chriskellyphotography9 website: chriskellyphotography.ca
