I was relaxing on my inbound Metro North express when I noticed a sign advertising Grand Central Terminal's Annual Holiday Train Show. The sign said the show was located in Grand Central's New York Transit Museum Store. Various types of model trains were to be featured, including late model and antique Lionel sets. With visions of diesel locomotives and interlockings dancing in my head, I knew I had to go. Immediately upon walking into the store, I knew the hype was for real. The layout was 34 feet long, featuring both freight trains and Amtrak trains pulling various types of coaches. The consists were unique, with equipment from different time periods. The model railroad layout ranged from urban NYC to upstate mountainous territory. It was cool to see a single display encompass yellow taxicabs and snowy bridges and tunnels. The Empire State Building was the centerpiece of the display, but minute details made it truly spectacular. Subtle characteristics included railroad track workers, a billboard painter, an Irish Pub, and a bunter guarding the end of the line. The Grand Central Terminal gift shop is surely worth a visit. A small selection of Lionel trains are for sale, but the shop's primary focus seems to be on the MTA and New York City's subway system.
