Your main bag is carried by porters, but there are strict weight limits, and every extra item you throw in is something you have to sort through each night in a small tent after a long day on the trail. Knowing what earns its place in the bag — and what does not — saves time, stress, and energy on the mountain. The other common mistake is underpacking for the cold. Most people expect Africa to be warm, but summit night on Kilimanjaro can hit minus 20 degrees Celsius. If your layering system is not right, you will feel it at 5,000m when your body is already working hard just to keep moving at altitude.
