When I first saw them, I was memorized by the complexity of the Future Craft 4D Midsole. How was it possible that so much detail could even exist with traditional midsole manufacturing techniques? How did they find a way of making those materials work as performance footwear? The Caption in the article I read said “3D printed midsoles”, but the truth behind this tech was allot more intricate that the headline would suggest. Adidas partnered up with Technology Company Carbon, who had developed a technique of growing the Future Craft 4D Midsoles from a liquid using a process called Continuous Liquid Interface Production C.L.I.P. This was a process of projecting an image into a liquid solution and using light and oxygen to manipulate the material with laser accuracy to create a shape which is grown from the solution. The end goal for adidas is to create a mass product that can be fine-tuned and produced to very specific consumer needs. Imagine 2 consumers both interested in the same sneaker. One weights 50KG and another 120KG. Both of them wear a size US9. Future Craft 4D could create a midsole which is developed diffidently according to these consumer needs and body types BUT still using the same size. Future Craft 4D is truly an innovative marvel and a sight to behold.
