For many years, people did not believe it possible for mankind to run 100 meters faster than 10 Seconds. Breaking 10 Seconds was a monumental landmark in athletics history and is now achieved by a several Elite Athletes including South Africa’s own Akani Simbine. The next major athletic landmark Nike has to embark on breaking is the 2 hour marathon. Nike focused its gaze on this goal when the world record was at 02:02:57 for the marathon. Nike had met up with industry experts and Elite athletes to discuss this project. In a conversation with Eliud Kipchoge, Nike shares that Eliud has suggested a marathon shoe designed similar to a track spike. Something which had a firm structure which could propel the athlete forward. This was the first direction Nike took in creating the future of the marathon shoe. Nike created a new midsole cushion it named Zoom X. (not to be confused with Zoom Air since these midsoles had no air in them) Nikes Zoom X has proven to be 50% lighter than all superior foams on the market. This foam encapsulated a full-length carbon plate which had been shaped with a Nike proprietary curve. This invisible plate offered the runner immense propulsion and minimized fatigue for the long run. Nike was so impressed with the outcome that they went to the LAB and compared the new prototype to the running shoes (or their predecessors) which how have posted the fastest marathon records. The shoes used in the study was the Nike Streak 6 and the adi Zero Adios Boost 2. Before testing, Nike added lead weights to the shoes which weighed less so that they would all weight the same. This was done to compare other factors responsible for adding or minimizing fatigue in an athlete. 18 Athletes tested all 3 shoes and ran in them for 5 minutes at different days and different times. The data then revealed that it took 2%-6% less effort to run in the new Nike Prototype. Nike named the shoe the ZoomX Vapor Fly 4% since an average was applied. Here was the new mantra which drove the project. If the world record is @ 02:02:57 and you cut that time by 4%, you have achieved a sub 2hour time. Nike puts its thinking to the test by creating a marathon simulation within which ZoomX Vapor Fly 4% could me matchup up with the world’s elite runners. The Grand Prix Racing track Monza was chosen for its fast racing construct and Nike puts into play everything within its control to break the 2 hour mark. The net result is that Eliud Kipchoge runs in a time of 02:00:25. This is the fastest a marathon time recorded, but not an official marathon time (since this was not an official marathon). The Breaking 2 initiative showed both Nike and the athletes how achievable this task could be. Eliud Kipchoge does however push the boundaries within the 2018 Berlin Marathon as he sets a new world record of 02:01:38 in a pair of ZoomX Vapor Fly 4% Fly Knit. In late April 2019, Nike releases the ZoomX Vapor Fly Next % AKA the 5% which show off vast improvements to the upper, midsole and outsole plus the promises of an additional 1% of efficiency in the run. Nike will plan another attempt at Breaking 2 later in 2019 and the project will be led by Eliud Kipchoge
