Social Security Fairness Act - Recent Updates February 2025

This is a follow up from our most recent video on the Social Security Fairness Act. It includes recent updates from the Social Security Administration. The Social Security Fairness Act addressed the disparities caused by the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO). These provisions reduced Social Security benefits for individuals who have pensions from employment not covered by Social Security, affecting primarily public servants such as teachers, firefighters, and police officers. The WEP modified the way Social Security benefits were calculated for those who received a pension from a job not covered by Social Security. This often resulted in lower benefits for retirees who have worked both in jobs that paid into Social Security and in jobs that did not. The GPO reduced Social Security spousal or survivor benefits for individuals who also received a government pension based on work not covered by Social Security. The offset typically reduces these benefits by two-thirds of the government pension amount, which could eliminate these benefits all together. The Social Security Fairness Act eliminated both the WEP and GPO, thereby ensuring that public servants receive full Social Security benefits. By removing these provisions, the Act aims to provide higher benefits to those who have contributed to Social Security and have earned a government pension.
