The weekend is upon us and it's time for our regular helping of retro fun and frivolity. It's 15 years since these bright young things were photographed out and about in Newcastle city centre. The pictures originally appeared in our Bigg Night Out section which ran in the Chronicle every Friday between 1999 and 2011 and featured lads and lasses enjoying the Toon's nightlife. We hope the years since 2006 have been good for the people in our photos. But how much of what was going on back then do you remember? In our region, it was the year Newcastle United centre-forward Alan Shearer played his last game and retired as the club's record goalscorer; Guns 'n Roses fronted by Axl Rose rocked out at Newcastle Arena, and hundreds of people gathered outside Newcastle Theatre Royal in protest at some of the controversial themes in the production, Jerry Springer The Musical, which was showing there. It was a year that also saw more of us begin to enjoy online gaming. Nintendo launched its hugely successful Wii console; Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein was found guilty of crimes against humanity and sentenced to death by hanging, and Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her 80th birthday at Windsor Castle. Check out our Bigg Night Out photographs and see if you recognise any faces.
