DJ Booking Deposits, How much should you take and when? Welcome back to #Questions this episode I have received a question from Scott Geoffrey who has asked: Hi, Hope you’re well. I was wondering do you try and get a deposit from the person booking you for a gig? Or perhaps you get paid on the day? Thanks Well Scott, In my opinion you must always get a deposit if it’s a private booking and there are some important reasons why. 1) If they cancel at the last minute you have had some money 2) It shows a commitment that they do want you for their event. 3) It separates the wanabe bookers from the real bookers and stops you being messed around. Your next decision is how much deposit should you take. There are several thoughts on this. Some DJ’s I know take 50% but some people might be apprehensive about coughing up a large sum of money a year or so in advance. Personally I take between £50 and £100 which secures the date for them. Next you will need to sort out when they need to pay the deposit, myself I require the deposit to secure the date, I often offer to put the date on hold for them for a week or two, allowing them time to confirm and make payment. Your next thoughts should be to sort out when they need to pay the balance, again this varies from DJ to DJ, I know some DJ’s that require the full payment at least 1 or 2 months in advance, myself I require full payment before the event date. What if they cancel after paying the deposit and before the event date, traditionally this has been very rare for me to receive a cancellation before the Covonavirus was around. I would literally only get one maybe two a year, and that was usually a Bride and groom that have decided to split. But I do have this covered in my booking document so if its close to the date I still get paid in full. With Coronavirus causing so much upheaval with bookings I revised my terms and conditions temporarily to allow for anyone who had an event effected by the lockdown the ability to move to a new event date and they don’t lose their deposit. If they decided to cancel altogether then they only lost the deposit that had been paid and not the balance due.
