So, I know the Warhammer lore well enough to chat your ear off about it, but when it comes to actually playing and painting? I'm still very much winging it. I've had a few games, the army’s coming along (if “slapping paint on and hoping for the best” counts), and I’m slowly figuring it out. This space isn’t about perfect set-ups, pro-level paint jobs, or affiliate links disguised as helpful advice. This is for the rest of us - the “paint in your dressing gown, swear at glue, cry over eyeballs” crowd. Here’s what I wish I’d known when I started: 1. Lore helps, but don’t stress it. Three main sides: Imperium (humans with issues), Chaos (metal album energy), Xenos (everything else). Pick what vibes with you: angsty heroes, daemonic nightmares, or green lads who love violence and shouting. 2. Factions are like Hogwarts houses… but angrier. Choose what looks cool or feels fun. Don’t overthink it. You’re not marrying them. 3. Budget carefully. Start small — a Combat Patrol, a few paints, one or two brushes. Check eBay. Accept that “pre-built” might mean “glued by a toddler”. 4. Painting: thin your paints. Always. Aim for somewhere between soup and milk. It won’t be perfect. That’s fine. You’re learning. 5. Rules are overwhelming. That’s normal. Don’t try to memorise everything. Play small games. Use the app. Make mistakes. Laugh at them. 6. Codex: helpful, but not sacred. Grab one for your faction, mostly for rules, colours, and fun art. Bonus: the app code means you barely need to open the book again. 7. Community matters. You can’t Warhammer alone forever. Local clubs, online groups, comment sections. We’re out here, and most of us are lovely. 8. Forget perfect. Just play. Your terrain can be cereal boxes. Your models can be named after memes. It’s your game. Enjoy it. 9. Mistakes welcome. Glue your fingers together. Paint a face like a Picasso nightmare. We've all done it. Keep going. Final thought: You don’t have to be great at this. You just have to enjoy it. Start small, ask questions, laugh often. If your Space Marine is bright pink and dual-wields butter knives he’s still part of the Emperor’s light. Drop a comment if you've got tips, or if you're new, please come say hi. We’re all learning together. #warhammer #warhammer40k #warhammer40000 #warhammercommunity #warhammeradvice #warhammerforbeginners #playingwarhammer #paintingwarhammer #paintingminiatures #paintingforbeginners #nerdgirl
