International Council of Systems Engineering – Transportation Working Group 2023 Monthly Webinar Series – January 19th, 2023 Joint webinar with: – American Public Transportation Association (APTA) Systems Engineering Subcommittee, and – INCOSE UK Railway Interest Group Systems Thinking and Customer Focus for Railway Projects Presented by Professor Clive Roberts - Head of School of Engineering, University of Birmingham and Professor Paul Plummer - Professor in Rail Strategy, University of Birmingham Abstract: Excellent systems-thinking and genuine customer-focus are critical enablers for railway projects which optimise the whole-life-cycle of assets and integrate with other parts of the railway-system across the whole-network. They create better end-to-end journeys, make travel more inclusive and improve sustainability of transport and logistics. This sounds obvious but there are sometimes obstacles to such an holistic approach and the issues are not unique too rail. So how can we make things better through research, innovation, education and sharing good practice?
