It's the fourth entry into the long-running Fatal Fury series (if you count Fatal Fury Special, which is an updated version of Fatal Fury 2). The game was released by SNK on their Neo Geo arcade hardware and home console. It was subsequently ported to Neo Geo CD, Microsoft Windows, and SEGA Saturn. In later years, the game was released for Sony PlayStation 2 as part of a compilation, and on Nintendo Wii as part of the virtual console range. The game features 10 standard fighters and 3 secret boss characters. The hidden bosses are only encountered as opponents if the player performs to a high standard throughout the game. It is possible to play as the boss characters in the home releases of Fatal Fury 3, by beating the game and entering a cheat code on the character selection screen. On the arcade version however, a hacked ROM file must be used. The boss hack by Yumeji was used to record this video. Fatal Fury 3 offers some unique and impressive grappling moves relative to other 2D fighting games. For example, the character Geese Howard uses Aikido techniques including counter throws against certain strikes. Blue Mary uses the submission grappling system Combat Sambo which includes head and joint locks, such as a flying armbar. I also particularly like Sokaku's Izuna Drop, which he performs by summoning a spirit demon. Not every character has interesting throw and grab moves, however. Kickboxer Franco Bash only has one grab move, which is based on a strike. The final boss twins Jin Chonrei and Jin Chonshu largely share the same moveset, which is disappointing. That said, I do like their rushing DDT move. The player can perform a desperation move when they have low health. There are also hidden desperation moves which can be unlocked by pressing Start plus all attack buttons when the word "Go!" appears at the start of a match. If done correctly, the name of the player's character will turn yellow. The hidden desperation moves can only be performed under specific circumstances, such as being a certain distance from the opponent, or performing a movement such as a backwards dodge. The character's name will flash when they are eligible to perform the hidden desperation move. Some desperation moves are throws. I found that it was impossible to perform Jin Chonshu's hidden desperation move in the hacked arcade version of the game, as it forces the player to stand too close for the move to connect (it goes through the opponent). However, it is the same energy draining technique as his standard desperation move, only with a longer duration and therefore larger effect. Jin Chonrei can perform this technique as part of his standard moveset. Overall, Fatal Fury 3 is a fun 2D fighter with appealing characters. It showed good innovation in the fighting game genre by using uncommon throw and grab moves. Thanks for checking out All Throws. Remember to subscribe for more grappling goodness.
