Apparently it is possible to format a regular 3.5 inch 1.44MB floppy disk as 2.88MB ED format with an IBM 2.88MB drive. This is despite the fact that the ED format has a different hole position in the disk, that supposedly tells the drive otherwise. This drive seems to ignore the holes, and treats every disk as if it were 2.88MB. Not every disk yields 0 bad sectors after formatting, though. Regular branded 1.44MB disks will almost always get 5-10% bad sectors when formatted as 2.88MB, but these unbranded white disks have around a 90% chance of yielding 0 bad sectors, which I found quite impressive. I have no idea how long such disks would hold their data, though they remain reliable for at least several days; likely they will stay good longer.
