Theodors travels motovlog. This short series is about some sightseeing points in Saaremaa. In this episode I will visit Piretikivi, find out how that helped to create a swamp and take a look at the bird watching tower near Linnulaht. Saaremaa is Estonias largest and most populous island. It is the main island of the West Estonian archipelago (Moonsund archipelago), it is located in the Baltic Sea, south of Hiiumaa island and northwest of the Gulf of Riga. The administrative center of the island, and of the Saare maakond (county), is the town of Kuressaare. Kuressaare is the administrative centre of Saaremaa Municipality and Westernmost town in Estonia. The town is situated on the southern coast of Saaremaa island, facing the Gulf of Riga of the Baltic Sea, and is served by the Kuressaare Airport, Roomassaare harbour, and Kuressaare yacht harbour. Kuressaare's historic name was Arensburg. Suur Tõll was the folklore hero of Saaremaa. According to the legend he was a strong giant, protecting his people from the enemy. He loved eating cabbages and was able to walk across the island in one long stride. He had a wife called Piret. Piretikivi (Piret’s Stone) is a large boulder located along the Kuressaare-Laimjala road. According to the legend, Piret was gathering stones to build a sauna, carrying them in her apron. However, one of the apron straps broke. Some versions of the legend say that a stone fell on her toe, another one says that Piret was just devastated from the apron being ripped. Either way, as a result, Piret began to cry and a swamp formed from her tears, which is now known as Naistesoo (Women’s Swamp). Kahtla or Laimjala orthodox church (Saint Basil the Great Church) was built in late 19'th century. The bell tower was added couple of decades later, in early 20'th century. Linnulaht (Bird Gulf) or Väikelaht (Small Gulf) is a lake in Saaremaa, next to Kuressaare. It has been separate from the sea, for only about 1000 years. It is part of a nature preservation area, designated for birds nesting. Most numerous birds of the area are Common gull, Common tern and Little gull. But you can also see species like Great crested grebe, Greylag goose, Mallard, Northern shoveler, Mute swan, Little bittern and Little crake. Many of them endangered species. The Blesta Stones (Blesta kivid) are a modern art installation on Saaremaa island in Estonia, located near villages Saareküla and Allikalahe. The stones are dedicated to the mythical Nordic goddess Blesta and are designed to resemble a stone altar within a spiral of limestone, symbolizing the emerged land from the sea. Central stone has been split by lightning. It was brought from Kaali, which is the location with a famous meteor crater. The monument was created by the Abal Order and is a popular tourist attraction, with many visitors engaging in rituals at the site. The idea of the memorial comes from the Abal Order, stating that land had started to emerge from the sea after a number of catastrophes, taking place approximately 20,000 years ago. Saaremaa - the Mother Island was among the first pieces of earth, emerging from the sea 12,000 years ago. I ride a Honda GL1500C Valkyrie from 1997, with custom paint.
