The 51 career goals Alex Ovechkin has scored in the final minute of regulation. This is the second-most of any player in NHL history, behind Wayne Gretzky’s 70. Unsurprisingly, 39 of Ovechkin’s last-minute tallies have been of the empty-net variety. However, 8 have been game-tying goals, tying him for most all-time with Phil Esposito, Dave Andreychuk, and Evander Kane. Ovechkin, the all-time leader in overtime game-winning goals, has never scored a game-winning goal in the final minute of regulation. In fact, on 1 occasion (December 15, 2006 vs. Thrashers) he went on to score the overtime winner himself (an NHL-record 6 seconds into the extra frame) after scoring the equalizer in the final minute of regulation. He has used last-minute goals to complete 16 multi-goal games, 5 hat tricks, and 2 four-goal games. Ovechkin has gone a step further to record 3 last-second goals, of which 1 was a game-tying goal (November 15, 2008 vs. Devils) and 2 were empty netters. Ovechkin’s last-minute goals include his 400th career goal on December 20, 2013 in Carolina and his 695th career goal to pass Mark Messier for eighth-most in NHL history on January 31, 2020 in Ottawa.
