In the mid-1960s, a "helpful" helicopter water drop went horribly wrong, spreading a brush fire directly onto my crew. We were forced into a dry pond, huddling together while I sprayed us with water until the hose itself burned away. While working as a nozzle man on a Forest Service Tanker Crew near Auberry, CA, we were making progress on an initial fire line. That changed when an experimental helicopter drop came in too low. Instead of a mist, a solid column of water hit the ground, exploding the fire in every direction and surrounding our 6-man crew. This is the story of how we survived the heat in the middle of a dry pond and the lessons learned from the early, dangerous days of aerial firefighting. If you want to hear more raw, firsthand accounts of early firefighting and aviation, subscribe to the Chronicles and check out "The Starting Line" playlist. 0:00 - The Green Fire Engine: Forest Service Tanker Crew 1:10 - Working the Line: The Nozzle Man's Job 2:45 - Fire Near Auberry, CA (1960s) 4:20 - The Experimental Helicopter Water Drop 5:50 - The Disaster: When Water Spreads Fire 7:15 - Retreating to the Dry Pond 8:40 - Holding the Line While the Hose Burns 10:15 - Surviving the "Friendly Fire" 11:50 - Lessons from Early Aerial Firefighting
