In the 1960s, I was a young Hotshot fighting the Patterson Bluff fire when the wind shifted. We were trapped by a wall of fire with only one way out: a 10-foot-wide ravine where I had to assist my crewmates across to survive. This is the story of a close call above Pine Flat Reservoir. While battling the flames with 1940s surplus gear, I managed to get across a 20-foot-deep gully and then acted as the anchor to pull two fellow firefighters across as they leaped for their lives. From that desperate escape to the "chewing out" I received from my crew chief for losing my chainsaw in the chaos, this is a raw look at the reality of firefighting on the front lines. If you want to hear more stories from a life lived on the front lines and in the cockpit, subscribe to the Chronicles. 0:00 - Fighting Fires with WWII Surplus Gear 1:18 - The Patterson Bluff Incident 2:45 - The Moment the Wind Shifted 4:30 - Finding the Path: Crossing the Ravine 7:10 - The Life-Line: Assisting My Crewmates Across 8:50 - Abandoning the Chainsaw to Survive 10:45 - Chewed Out by the Crew Chief 11:30 - Mop-up Operations and the 5-Mile Patrol 13:50 - The Helicopter That Never Came (The Chief's Revenge)
