Many students with Autism Spectrum and ADD are visual learners. Visuals can help these kids because they give them something to refer to and look at for direction. Just like airline passengers may use a physical boarding pass to get through security and find their gate, a student can use a visual support to help them with a task or routine in the classroom. One advantage of using visuals is that children don’t need to rely on their working memory: they can refer back to the visual and know what’s expected of them. Helpful visuals may consist of written words or pictures, or they could be part of the classroom environment. Even how the room is arranged could be a visual support. If you find yourself repeating things over and over again to a neuro-diverse student, try some of these tips for using visual supports in your classroom. 🍎 ✏️ 🍎 ✏️ 🍎 ✏️ 🍎 ✏️ 🍎 ✏️ Sue Larkey is a Teacher & Lecturer who has a Masters in Special Education.
