On Saturday, August 17, 2013, a riot occurred at the Department of Juvenile Justice's Avon Park Youth Academy, which is located in unincorporated Polk County at the Avon Park Air Force Range (on SR 64 East in Polk County). As a result of this incident 61 of the 138 juveniles have been charged with the following charges: Riot, Introduction of Contraband, Grand Theft, Burglary, Felony Criminal Mischief, Petit Theft, Tampering with Coin Operating Device, and Theft of a Controlled Substance. The charge of arson will filed by the State Fire Marshal's Office on at least three of the juveniles. Below is a list of the charged juveniles and their new charges. As a side note, the Petit Theft charge stems from another juvenile stealing another's camouflage shorts and wearing them during the incident. Just go to show you run but you can't hide. It is estimated that these 61 juveniles caused approximately $350,000 in damage during this rampage. Previous criminal histories of these 61 juveniles have revealed they have been charged previously with a total of 919 charges (424 Felony charges, 336 Misdemeanor charges, and 159 Unknown level charges. Of those 424 charges 71 involved Resisting an Officer). "The sad truth of this riot is that it was 100% preventable. By Department of Juvenile Justice rule, the G4S employees are not allowed to have any specialty equipment, to include pepper spray, which would have allowed them to deal with the fight before it escalated into a riot. The injuries, estimated $350,000 of damage to the facility, cost of the law enforcement response, and the multiple charges and costs to the criminal justice system all could have been avoided. Regardless, our members did an outstanding job in response-including law enforcement, detention, emergency communications, and others. I am so grateful for your professionalism and dedication." -Sheriff Grady Judd
