Originally written for the junior string orchestra at the St. Paul's School for girls, Brook Green Suite was one of Gustav Holst's final compositions. He wrote it while in the hospital in 1933, the year before he died, and its premiere was the last concert he attended. He wished to contribute to the repertoire of easier string orchestra music that was substantial, not a watered down arrangement of a more difficult piece. It is often viewed as the younger sister to Holst's much more challenging suite for senior string orchestra, St. Paul's Suite. The name - Brook Green - comes from the neighbourhood in which the St. Paul's School is located. I had a highly enjoyable time arranging and recording this work for saxophone quartet. The independent lines of counterpoint lend themselves wonderfully to each saxophone part. And, due to the easier nature of the piece, the reduced range and relative lack of double stops in each string part made for quite a natural transition to the saxophone quartet. Huge thank you to Highwood Lutheran Church for allowing me to record in their sanctuary! Also to Heritage Christian Academy for letting me borrow a tenor and baritone sax for this project.
