King Belshazzar hosted a lavish feast for a thousand of his nobles when, suddenly, the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the wall of the palace. The king was terrified and summoned the wise men of Babylon to read and interpret the writing, but none could do so. At last, Daniel was brought in, and he revealed that the writing was a divine message of judgment. The message exposed Belshazzar’s improper response to the God of heaven, the true and sovereign ruler over kings and nations. Though Belshazzar knew how the Most High had humbled his father, Nebuchadnezzar, he refused to learn from that warning. Instead, he exalted himself, dishonored what was holy, and openly defied God. The Three Sins of Belshazzar: Pride, Profanity, and Praising Idols (vv. 18–23) Belshazzar lifted himself up against the Lord, profaned the sacred vessels of God’s house, and praised lifeless idols while refusing to honor the God who held his very breath.
