Earth observation satellites are a macroscope on our home planet and have transformed how we see it. They play important roles in our lives, for example in monitoring the health of ecosystems, city and regional planning, or mapping natural and man-made disasters. The global satellite data archive is growing at a rapid pace. We now have data going back 50 years to help us understand the past and plan for future. We are truly living in a golden age of Earth observation as availability and processing of satellite data has never been more accessible than at present. In this talk, Hakim inspires you to begin the journey of exploring this vast archive about of our home planet. With a Master’s in Geospatial Technologies and a PhD in Geobiosphere Science, he is a researcher at Lund University’s Center for Environmental and Climate Science in southern Sweden. At the age of 19, he encountered satellite data while volunteering at an environmental agency, and now he uses them to map forests types, assess the impacts of drought on ecosystems and even measuring carbon content of plants. “The global satellite data archive is growing at a rapid pace, and we now have data going back 50 years to help us understand the past and plan for the future. We are truly living in a golden age of Earth observation as availability and processing of satellite data has never been more accessible than at present”.
