In an octahedral complex, the d orbitals of the central metal ion divide into two sets of different energies. The separation in energy is the crystal field splitting energy, Δ. (A) When Δ is large, more favourable for electrons to occupy the lower set of orbits. In a tetrahedral crystal field splitting, the d-orbitals again split into two groups, with an energy difference of Δtet. The lower energy orbitals will be dz2 and dx2-y2, and the higher energy orbitals will be dxy, dxz and dyz opposite to the octahedral case.
