Swimming is known as a common form of 'low impact' physical activity that is often used as a complimentary intervention in attempts to treat individual's with lower back injuries or lower back pain. People at times may find low back pain relief by performing swimming regularly, but one must be careful, because swimming is not for everyone and it could make a lot of back pain cases worse! In this video, I share with you my thoughts regarding swimming and if it's actually an effective option in helping people reduce and treat their lower back pain. The key thing with regards to swimming is that the swimming program that one may follow must be individualized to one's needs in order for it to be effective and to prevent future problems from occurring. Also, in this video I address the issue with health care providers (e.g., medical doctors) prescribing swimming so quickly for lower back pain without even informing individual's about how to swim, an individualized swimming program and what swimming strokes may make an individual's back pain worse. When it comes to swimming, it is a term used to describe a general activity and doesn't specifically state which strokes one should or should not perform for lower back pain. For instance, the breast stroke and butterfly are two strokes often associated with causing lower back pain in elite swimmers, because of the hyper-extension based patterns associated with those movements. Ultimately, one needs to be careful when prescribing or performing swimming, because some strokes may make an individual worse. For instance, doing a low back extension based swimming movement (e.g., butterfly) for someone with extension based back pain would not be a good idea. All in all the big takeaway I share with you from this video is that everyone's lower back pain is different and not one will have the same program. Everyone needs a different program in order to address their lower back pain. Some may find swimming helpful, whereas may not :) Thank you for watching this video.
