All that is known about the composer Lazarin (or Lazzarini Salami) is that he was born around 1590, died in 1653, and was a member of the Vingt-quatre violons du roy. This piece was published by André Philidor, music librarian of the court of Louis XIV, who collected a large number of manuscripts from the court music of France and published them. It is a pavane in three sections, all of which are repeated (ornamented here as would have been expected). The original instrumentation is not specified but is in six parts, presented here is Alain Brunet's version for trumpet and organ with the trumpet part played on an instrument that projects nearly as well, the soprano or descant recorder.
