#ortasangiulio #isoladisangiulio #lakeorta Ciao Belli! How are you? Today we’ll discover a truly gem: the lake Orta, in my opinion one of the most romantic lake of Italy! Are you ready? Andiamo Lake Orta (Lago d’Orta in Italian) can be considered the “little cousin” of Lake Maggiore: both of them are alpine lakes, and they are less than half hour driving aroud the picturesque roads of Piedmont region. Couple of numbers to help you understand size differences: Lake Maggiore: 212,5 Km2 (82 Square Miles) Lake Orta: 18,2 Km2 (7 Square Miles) For our video we choose one of the most charming villages of the area, Orta San Giulio, a small town of less than 1400 inhabitants. The heart of the community is Piazza Motta, surrounded on three sides by well-proportioned buildings, mostly arcades while the 4th side overlooks the lake. From here the boats leave for the island of San Giulio. On the north side of the square is the XVI century "Broletto" or "Community Hall", consisting of a portico on the ground floor, once used as a market, and a meeting room on the upper floor. Here the legislative and executive power were exercised through the General Council and it’s considered the symbol of the region's long period of self-government. Reachable by a five minutes boat ride, the little Island of San Giulio is dominated by its Romanesque basilica, the bishop’s palace and the Benedictine abbey. According to the legend, the island (which lies not more than 400 metres from the lakefront of Orta), was once a bare rock inhabited by snakes and terrible monsters, until one day in 390 AD when San Giulio landed, crossing the lake on his cloak and guided in the storm by his staff. Here the Saint founded a church, which he later chose to be buried in, and transformed the island into a center of evangelization of the whole area. After docking, go up a short flight of steps leading to the atmospheric Romanesque Basilica, the island’s main attraction. From the church you can walk along the narrow street that goes around the whole of the island: the “way of silence and meditation”, in an evocative blend of spirituality and architecture. Strolling around the pathway you will come across the 19th century Bishop’s Palace, and the Mater Ecclesiae Benedictine Abbey, a convent of cloistered nuns who live permanently on the island, devoting their days to prayer, study, restoring valuable old church vestments, making communion wafers and the famous “pane di San Giulio” (St Julius’ bread). The other buildings on the island, now private residences, were once priests’ lodgings; one of the oldest is Villa Tallone, where concerts of classical music are held every year. A pleasant restaurant with a terrace on the lake and a souvenir shop complete the facilities available to the visitor. Don’t forget that this area is famous for the so called “Sacri Monti” (Sacred Mountains) built by faithful catholic as act of devotion through the centuries. They are groups of chapels and churches, calvaries and niches containing statues, frescoes and paintings that recall episodes from the Sacred Scriptures. Inserted onto the UNESCO World Heritage List, the Sacri Monti, lying between the subalpine valleys, were originally conceived as a place to offer a safer pilgrimage experience in respect to that made to the Holy Land. Still today, the Sacri Monti stupify for the harmonious blending of architectural elements with the magnificent surroundings of hills, forests and lakes. For true gourmets and food lovers, don't miss the incredible Villa Crespi restaurant. The Villa was built in 1879 by Cristoforo Benigno Crespi, a textile entrepreneur, who wanted to use it as a summer residence. Today it houses a luxury hotel managed by Relais et Châteaux and a 2 Michelin star restaurant by chef Antonino Cannavacciuiolo. Born in Vico Equense near Naples he is considered one of the best Italian chefs. Today he is also a TV star thanks to programs like Masterchef Italy and Hell’s Kitchen Italy among others.
