In this Ask an Expert session, Joanne Smith and Dr. David Ditor share both how to have high quality nutrition and weight loss after a spinal cord injury. BIOS: Joanne Smith is a Certified Nutrition Practitioner who graduated with first class honours from the Institute of Holistic Nutrition in Toronto, holds a degree in psychology from York University, as well as a diploma in radio & television broadcasting from Seneca College. Her nutrition services focus on individuals who have sustained traumatic injury with specialization in neurological conditions such as spinal cord and brain injuries, multiple sclerosis and cerebral palsy. David Ditor is a professor in the Department of Kinesiology at Brock University, and his research program focuses on the secondary health complications that accompany spinal cord injury. More specifically, Dr. Ditor’s research interests involve i) chronic inflammation after SCI and the associated range of negative effects, ii) cardiovascular disease and dysfunction after SCI, and iii) sexual dysfunction after SCI. As some of these health complications are modifiable, Dr. Ditor is also interested in the role of exercise and diet in managing and reversing them.
