The Resurrection, the Road to Emmaus, and Jesus’ Ascension • THE BIBLE | The Complete King James V... The Gospel of Luke is the third book of the New Testament and one of the four Gospels, providing a detailed and orderly account of the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Traditionally attributed to Luke, a physician and companion of the Apostle Paul, it is addressed to Theophilus, likely a patron or high-ranking official, with the purpose of giving a carefully researched and historically accurate account of Jesus’ life. Written around AD 60–80, Luke’s Gospel is known for its focus on Jesus’ compassion, inclusivity, and mission to all people, especially the poor, outcasts, and Gentiles. The Gospel begins with a unique and detailed birth narrative, including the angel Gabriel’s announcements to Zechariah about the birth of John the Baptist and to Mary about the miraculous conception of Jesus. It describes Mary’s visit to Elizabeth, John’s birth, and Mary’s song of praise, known as the Magnificat. Luke alone includes the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem, Jesus’ birth in a manger, and the announcement to the shepherds, highlighting God’s grace extended to the humble and lowly. Luke emphasizes Jesus’ humanity and divine mission, presenting Him as the Son of Man who came to seek and save the lost. His genealogy traces Jesus back to Adam, underscoring that He is the Savior for all humanity, not just Israel. After His baptism by John the Baptist and His temptation in the wilderness, Jesus begins His ministry, preaching in Nazareth, where He declares His mission to bring good news to the poor, freedom for the oppressed, and healing for the brokenhearted. Throughout the Gospel, Luke highlights Jesus’ compassion, particularly toward sinners, women, the sick, and social outcasts. He includes many parables that are unique to his Gospel, such as the Good Samaritan, the Prodigal Son, the Rich Man and Lazarus, and the Pharisee and the Tax Collector. These stories emphasize God’s mercy, the call to repentance, and the radical nature of His love for all people. Luke also focuses on Jesus’ interactions with women, giving special attention to figures such as Mary and Martha, the widow of Nain, the sinful woman who anoints Jesus’ feet, and the women who support His ministry. His Gospel portrays Jesus as the healer and Savior of all, with numerous miracles demonstrating His power over sickness, demons, nature, and even death. As Jesus moves toward Jerusalem, Luke devotes significant attention to His teachings on discipleship, humility, prayer, and the cost of following Him. The Parable of the Persistent Widow, the Parable of the Lost Sheep, and the story of Zacchaeus reinforce God’s relentless pursuit of sinners and the joy of salvation and restoration.
