Teaching Basic Skills AIARE Students Often Lack

All providers, course leaders, and instructors report a common challenge with open enrollment AIARE programs. Students are wary of entering the backcountry without avalanche training, so they lack foundational backcountry travel skills like navigation, skiing or splitboarding, general winter preparedness, and a familiarity with the physical rigors encountered by winter travelers. Providers, course leaders, and instructors address this challenge in novel ways throughout the country. They devise tools and lessons to give students just enough foundational knowledge to be successful in their first AIARE course. In this CE, we will explore a selection of screening tools, precourse activities, and on-course tactics to teach all the foundational skills the AIARE framework assumes students already know.
