Over the years I have composed many pieces for bass clarinet, and yet few for string quartet, which made this a particularly fun project for me. Lara has played several of my pieces, so I knew that I could count on her performance being spectacular. Exploring the string quartet in combination with her mad skills was something I was happy to become obsessed with for a few months. The piece is in three movements titled in Spanish in honor of Lara. The first movement “Rasgar,” translates to “rip.” That’s just what I wanted to convey: a music that is ripping! It is a high energy, flying-by-the-seat-of-your-pants sort of thing, with lightning-fast repeated notes in the strings that build into highly charged, huge textures. This music is about vim and vigor, verve and vitality. The second movement “Juego,” translates to “game”, or “to play.” It is a dance in 5/4, meant to be amusing and frolicsome. Throughout the movement there is an alternation between the playful pizzicato passages with minor arco passages, which are also playful in their own right. The third movement “Final,” translates to “finale.” There is a double meaning here. It is indeed the finale of this piece, but it also represents my finale to using Finale music notation software daily for three decades before the company closed its doors while writing this music. The movement is sprawling and epic, going in and out of many sections, ranging from giant tuttis to intimate solos. It is the longest of the three movements and seems to follow its own untold narrative, creating a sense of journey and ultimate arrival.
