Moons Ago - for bass flute Dedicated to Carla Rees My flute music playlist: • Music for flutes, by David Bennett Thomas My playlist of unaccompanied pieces: • Unaccompanied pieces for each instrument- ... Program note: Composed in 2025 for the great musician Carla Rees, Moons Ago is a set of four movements for bass flute, each taking a passage of poetry about the moon for inspiration. The bass flute, being such a lovely instrument capable of so many moods and textures, felt like the perfect instrument to carry the vision of these nocturnal songs. The pieces explore the expressive potential of the many techniques available to a composer when the instrument is in the hands of a virtuoso performer, making much of subtleties, nuances, and delicate shades of color. I. The Moon is Distant from the Sea The Moon is distant from the Sea – And yet, with Amber Hands – She leads Him – docile as a Boy – Along appointed Sands Emily Dickinson II. The Moon is a Curving Flower of Gold The moon is a curving flower of gold, The sky is still and blue; The moon was made for the sky to hold, And I for you Sara Teasdale III. How Thin and Sharp is the Moon Tonight! How thin and sharp is the moon tonight! How thin and sharp and ghostly white Is the slim curved crook of the moon tonight! Langston Hughes IV. Low Hangs the Moon, It Rose Late Low hangs the moon, it rose late, The yellow half-moon enlarged, sagging down, drooping, Late-risen and swollen as if with tears. It is lagging—O I think it is heavy with love, with love. Walt Whitman Recorded live, February 11, 2026 by Adrian Moore, Sheffield, UK. Additional mastering by Tom Spiker, Philadelphia, PA.
