The commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities and the South African Human Rights Commission have been hosting an event in Phoenix, north of Durban to honour the victims of the 2021 July unrest and those affected by it. Thirty-six people lost their lives in what was described as racially-motivated attacks after tensions reached breaking point between African and Indian communities in the riots which followed former president Jacob Zuma's arrest for contempt of court. The chairperson of the CRL Rights Commission Thoko Mkhwanazi-Xaluva says they will work with different organizations to bring reconciliation between the two communities.
