PAINTING VIDEO DESCRIPTION – This is a time-lapsed version. You can watch the full-length version here: • How to Draw and Paint Halloween SEE, HEAR,... Looking for an easy Halloween painting idea? Let me be your acrylic art instructor as I teach you easy step-by-step instructions throughout this fun beginner art video as you learn how to paint Jack O Lanterns and how to paint skeleton hands—a comical whimsical painting “SEE, HEAR, SPEAK NO EVIL” with acrylic paint. Have you ever heard the phrase, “See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil”? I remember learning about it once when I was in grade school and I know there were a couple of horror movies that came out a few years ago with the same or similar names, but, honestly, I wasn’t too sure what it meant. So, with my master’s degree in Googling, I typed in “See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” to see what popped up and this is what I learned. The origins are rooted in Confucianism as a way to teach the importance of avoiding evil. Confucius is quoted as saying “Look not at what is contrary to propriety; listen not to what is contrary to propriety; speak not what is contrary to propriety; make no movement which is contrary to propriety”. During that century, Buddhists monks spread the idea throughout the East into India, China and Japan and this principle is typically depicted with three monkeys—one covering its eyes, one covering its ears and one covering its mouth. In modern days, there is even a fourth monkey covering its genitals which represents to do no evil. Since this is the Halloween season, I thought it would be fun to express this proverb using Jack-O-Lanterns and skeleton hands. The painting process for this beginner art lesson is so simple. The first step to this acrylic art lesson is to draw an outline for the pumpkins and paint the background with black. It’s as simple as it sounds but it’s effective and important to create the Halloween mood and it will allow the colors of your three Jack O Lanterns to pop off the canvas. Then you’ll learn how to paint pumpkins by layering colors and using a wet-on-wet technique to create richness, form and texture to the skin of your stacked Halloween gourds. Then you’ll learn how to paint eyes, nose and a mouth on each of your carved pumpkins adding a glow from inside their heads from a candle flame or light, which will create depth in the facial expressions. After using color theory to learn how to blend colors to make a base coat for your bones, you’ll learn how to draw skeleton hands using a one brushstroke technique. Then you’ll finish your hands by adding highlights and shadows to show the shape of the bones in the fingers, wrists and arms to give the digits a more realistic 3-D look, like a photograph. The art lesson is so easy to follow, you’ll feel like it’s a paint by numbers. Have fun and create the perfect canvas wall art fitting for a diy project to decorate your home for Halloween. Using only 3 brushes and 5 colors, you’ll paint like a professional and create the best canvas painting in the world! Have a date night, paint party, paint and sip event, or virtual paint night.
