Join us in a three part Massey Dialogues series to commemorate and celebrate Black History Month and culture. Canada’s past (and present) has been fraught with discomfort and often neglect over recognizing and addressing racism, particularly anti-Black racism. The spring/summer of 2020 brought a rise in movements across the country addressing these issues. We speak with Professor El Jones and Junior Fellows L’Ashante Henry and Nicole Mfoafo-M’Carthy in a special Massey Dialogues to take stock of where Canada has been and where it is heading on confronting anti-Black racism. El Jones is a spoken word poet, an educator, journalist, and community activist living in African Nova Scotia. She was the fifth Poet Laureate of Halifax. In 2016, El was a recipient of the Burnley “Rocky” Jones human rights award for her community work and work in prison justice. She is a co-founder of the Black Power Hour, a live radio show with incarcerated people on CKDU that creates space for people inside to share their creative work and discuss contemporary social and political issues. El was appointed the Nancy’s Chair of Women’s Studies at Mount Saint Vincent University for the 2017-2019 term. She is a winner of two Atlantic Journalism gold awards in 2018 and 2019. Her book of spoken word poetry, Live from the Afrikan Resistance! was published by Roseway Press in 2014. El would like to pay tribute to the many nameless and unrecognized women whose work makes it possible for her to be here today. Nicole Mfoafo-M’Carthy is a first-year medical student at the University of Toronto. Prior to medicine, she completed her Bachelor of Health Sciences (Honours) at the University of Calgary in 2020. During her time at the University of Calgary, Nicole completed a thesis on gender at work and the factors and practices that impact employees’ experiences with mental health and develop policies that account for intersectionality and diversity in the workplace. She is a recipient of the National Terry Fox Humanitarian scholarship and the 2019 Sheila O’Brien Award for Excellence in Leadership. Nicole is a Junior Fellow at Massey College where she serves as an advisor on the anti-black racism committee and the chair of the Health committee. Nicole has an interest in health equity, social justice and community engagement. L’Ashante Henry is a 1L student in the JD Program at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law and a Junior Fellow at Massey College. Prior to law school, L’Ashante completed an H.B. Com and MBA from Laurentian University. While there, she was also the captain of the Women’s Varsity Basketball team. She volunteers as a Law Firm Mentoring Leader with Law in Action Within Schools (LAWS), an Associate Editor for the Journal of Law and Equality (JLE) and a Working Group Member for the International Human Rights Program (IHRP). L’Ashante is driven to affect economic and social progress in law and business. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To ensure you never miss a Massey Event, subscribe to our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/masseyco...
