You'll be surprised just how far you can make a bag of compost stretch. The soil/compost mix I had in pots last year, I tip up in the veg beds and mix in fresh soil, compost and a trowel full each of bought manure and builder's sand. When planting out new plants, I dig the right sized hole and just put in a trowel or hand full of compost/manure in the bottom of the hole before backfilling and firming. It's the best frugal make do solution when you cant make or afford to buy enough compost and manure. Side note, I usually reserve manure for the perennials, pumpkins, gherkins, tomatoes and peppers. All the hungry plants. Self-reliance in all its avenues; frugal living, appropriate prepping, making do, gardening, writing books, creating online content and products and sometimes crafting is what we are about. We hope it will inspire others to find their own way to have that homesteading life, no matter what house or flat (apartment) they live in and whether they have a garden or not. We also hope that sharing how we build resilience, financial security and resourcefulness will help you in your own self-sufficiency goals. Here at Blue Garden Cottage, Hubby and I grow, preserve, craft, make-do-and-mend, reduce, reuse, up-cycle and recycle. I write books and create blogs on UK suburban homesteading (part of our self-sufficiency lifestyle) and more.
