Students need on-going instruction in how to persist in evolving their sentence composition skills in order to support their ever-developing writing expertise. This sentence savoir-faire does not emerge and thrive without consciences teachers’ consistent attention to scaffolding students’ understanding of how sentences work and how sentences can be crafted across grade levels at ever-increasing levels of sophistication. A strong foundation that develops from internalizing the jobs that specific sentences accomplish and the types of sentences that can be created using specific grammatical constructions is key to your students becoming writers who can vary sentence structure for maximum effect.
