In 1920 Johnny Dodds stepped off the New Orleans to Chicago train with his clarinet, wrapped in newspaper under one arm; that evening he joined the legendary King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band at the Dreamland. He never looked back. Three years later, with Louis Armstrong on second cornet, they made history recording nine tunes for Gennet on which Dodds lays down the role of the clarinet in New Orleans jazz. He went on to play with Louis Armstrong's Hot Five and soon after Dodds led his own bands - the New Orleans Wanderers, The New Orleans Bootblacks and the Chicago Foot warmers. It is with this last band that he recorded "Lady Love" composed by Natty Dominique. In this video the Feetwarmers version of "Lady Love" shows off the band's soloists as well their consummate New Orleans ensemble playing. Tom Barnebey (cornet) starts them off on the verse, ahead of the full band on the chorus, followed by solos from Roy Rubinstein (trombone) and Pete Main (clarinet). Next the cornets , Mike Slack and Tom, have fun trading 4 bar phrases then 2 bars and then it's time for a piano solo by Bill Gould. Wonderful New Orleans jazz treatment by a full band of a classic jazz tune originally recorded by a fine quartet - feel the love, enjoy. During the ongoing Covid Pandemic, the Feetwarmers are pleased to share their recordings via YouTube in the hope that they will bring some happiness and solace in difficult times - enjoy and stay safe until we can play for you live again. That will be soooo good. Release of this video was scheduled for just before the Christmas/ Year End Holidays of 2021 so our fans can celebrate with a fine jazz classic by the S F Feetwarmers. San Francisco Feetwarmers ... that's an unusual name. Not when you recall the great Sidney Bechet's New Orleans Feetwarmers, Johnny Dodds' Chicago Footwarmers and Duke Ellington's Harlem Feetwarmers. It is the perfect name for a Bay Area band known for playing classic jazz with a touch of class. San Francisco Feetwarmers www.sffeetwarmers.com
