Advocacy for topics like gender pay gap and abortion rights is very difficult when it is marred by audiences that are irrational and unreceptive. As an avid advocate for feminism, I have encountered a lot of circumstances where my efforts to discuss important issues that are suppressing women across the country have been shut down with anything from invalidation to ad hominem. When confronted with fallacies, prejudice, and narrowmindedness, it is easy to lose sight of how much one cares about advocating for a cause and the confidence in one's ability to do so. So what can you do to ensure you advocate for feminism in a way that cannot be labeled as "emotional" or "irrational?" Elliott Slaughter is a junior at the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science with a passion for chemical engineering, writing, and advocacy. She is an executive board member and content creator for Nightingale Advocacy, a nonprofit that drives youth towards progressive health policy, and she leads the chapter at TAMS. She is also an avid feminist and environmentalist, never hesitating to champion the changes she believes in. When she’s not studying or toiling away in her research lab, you can find her compiling TikTok sounds for her next health policy reel, mapping out plots for sci-fi stories, and (of course) scheming to overthrow the patriarchy.
