In January, 1866, workmen who were digging the foundations of the Victoria Embankment uncovered the skeleton of a man buried deep in the mud of the River Thames. A wellington boot, part of an old coat, and a pair of false teeth set in a gold case were the few items found with it that could help identify whose skeleton it was. Thus, an inquest was convened, and the Coroner, Mr. Payne, along with several doctors and dentists began examining the evidence to ascertain the identity of the deceased person. It was evident from the possessions that he must have been somebody who was reasonably well off, if not outright wealthy, and, according to doctors, he had lain in the Thames for 15 to 20 years. But who was he? In this video, we follow the events of the case; from the initial finding of the skeleton, through the various hearings of the inquest, and onto the people who came forward to claim the remains as being those of a husband or a sibling.
