A lot of people have a problem with turning away from your opponent because it “exposes your back.” The truth is there is a difference between someone being behind you and having your back. That difference is inside space. I agree that turning away isn’t a great option for self defense. But it is fun to explore for most bjj practitioners. The principles are the same as for any other positional defense and escapes. 1. Make it really hard for them to connect to you. Own the inside space. 2. If they have connected, disconnect them. This is an important skill from every bjj position. This is handfighting/grip fighting. 3. Move your hips into open space. 4. Recover guard or get to your feet. 5. In a bjj setting, think offense and win the next position. Hint: this usually involves taking and owning inside space. I teach my version of Priit Mickelson’s Running Man. From there you can go to Turtle or the other direction to Seated Turtle/Panda. Each option has multiple routes to recover guard or get to your feet.
