The surge of artificial intelligence (AI) has led to incredible advancements in the field of generative AI, which is expected to have a significant impact on various disciplines, including the arts and creative professions. In recent years, generative AI has been used to create novel artwork, music, and even entire films. However, there are still many open questions and misconceptions about AI and its advantages and dangers when it comes to its role in shaping filmmaking. While AI can assist filmmakers in various aspects of the filmmaking process, there is a concern that it may replace human creativity and artistic vision altogether. This panel discussion brought together leading experts from diverse disciplines, including neuroscience, computer science, and filmmaking, discussing topics at the intersection of AI, creativity, and filmmaking, and addressing a wide range of questions such as: Can machines truly be creative? What are the limits of generative AI when it comes to filmmaking? And how much AI is too much AI? The event began with two presentations to establish a framework for discussion, including: YVES BERGQUIST, who discussed the foundational principles behind the technology, such as What is AI? What is Generative AI? How do technologies like ChatGPT work? & KARIM JERBI, who discussed the rise of Neuro-AI, creativity in brains and machines, and brain-driven audio-visual experiments that combine neuro-engineering and AI. The presentations were followed by a live demo of brain-driven modulation of audio-visual landscapes (University of Montreal / USC) & a screening of CRITTERZ (5 min.), the first film with visuals generated entirely by OpenAI DALL-E. The Panel Discussion included: JON DUDKOWSKI, A.C.E., SCA Alumnus, Director/Editor on Star Trek: Discovery YVES BERGQUIST, Director of the AI & Blockchain in Media Project at USC’s Entertainment Technology Center CHAD NELSON, Director of CRITTERZ WILLIAM SWARTOUT, Chief Technology Officer, USC Institute for Creative Technologies MARY SWEENEY, Writer, Director, Producer, Editor, Dino and Martha De Laurentiis Endowed Professor KARIM JERBI, Visiting Scholar at the Brain Imaging Group at USC’s Ming Hsieh Institute ATHENA WICKHAM, SCA Alumna, Executive Producer on Westworld and The Peripheral
