A recent report from the Arizona Auditor General reveals many issues public schools are facing in the state. According to the report, “One-third of districts statewide are at increased financial risk because of declining student enrollment and associated funding.” The report also stated that between fiscal years 2024 and 2025, more than 5,000 students left public district schools to participate in the Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) program. The ESA program has been controversial since it was passed in 2022. Critics argue it takes money away from public schools. “We’ve got public school teachers that can’t take field trips with their kids. They can’t afford coffee, copy paper or coffee,” said Beth Lewis, co-executive director of Save Our Schools Arizona. Lewis believes this program, which is nearing the $1 billion mark in spending, could be used to help fund public schools instead.
