At about 2:29 AM, on Sunday, June 9th, 2024, Officers assigned to District B-3 (Mattapan) recovered a firearm while searching for a suspect who crashed a vehicle while fleeing from a traffic stop at 155 Talbot Ave, Dorchester. Officers were on patrol and driving on Talbot Ave, when their attention was drawn to an Infiniti sedan that they witnessed abruptly and improperly pull over into a no parking zone, without turn signals. Officers activated their emergency lights and sirens and conducted a traffic stop. Upon closer inspection, Officers observed three men inside the vehicle. As officers approached the Infinity, they encountered several obstacles, including a passenger exiting the vehicle who was yelling at officers while attempting to block their path. Officers were able to approach the operator in the vehicle and identify him, but as the traffic stop continued, and motor vehicle violations were explained, the operator became confrontational and attempted to flee while an Officer’s upper body was inside the vehicle near the driver’s side window. The Officer was able to remove himself from the vehicle without injury before the operator fled. After the suspect fled, Officers witnessed him crash his vehicle into a parked car and the operator and remaining passenger fled on-foot. Officers engaged in a foot pursuit but lost a visual on both suspects. Officers broadcasted a description of the suspects and began a canvas of the area, resulting in the recovery of a firearm in an area where the suspects were last seen. Detectives responded and determined that the firearm was a Smith & Wesson 9 Compact with one 9mm round in the chamber and seven 9mm rounds in the magazine. The operator of the motor vehicle was identified as Demetrius Steed, 30, of Dorchester. Steed was issued a Mass Uniform Citation for Failure to Stop for Police, Failure to Stop and/or Yield, Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Motor Vehicle Operator Refusal to Identify Self, Traveling at a Speed Greater Than Reasonable, Failure to Signal, and Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Property Damage.
