This Dot thermometer is only about a year old, but stopped working suddenly after it was dropped on the floor, because after inserting the probe into a roast I put the baking pan into the oven, and the probe wire pulled the main unit off the countertop and it struck the floor, probably where the probe plug attaches to the main unit. The internal probe port has several solder connections to the internal circuit board and it's easy to see how any side to side pressure could break those connections. In this video you see how to open up the Dot thermometer and check the status of the internal plug connection to see if the delicate solder joints are broken. (SPOILER ALERT: THEY WERE)
