Looking for free things to do in Dublin, Ireland? How about a walk to one of Dublin's hidden gems, the Poolbeg Lighthouse, which sits at the end of the Great South Wall. The Poolbeg Lighthouse walk also takes in Pembroke Cove, Irishtown Nature Park and Shellybanks Beach, one of the many beaches in Dublin. On the Great South Wall, where the River Liffey meets the ocean, it has views over Dublin Bay. To the right of the wall you can see a long stretch of the South Dublin coast, from Sandymount down to Killiney, with Dalkey Island and Muglins Lighthouse in the distance. To the left of the wall and you’ll get a view of Bull Island and Howth. At over 4km long, the Great South Wall which was originally known as The Piles, was the longest seawall in the world when it was completed in 1731. At the end of the wall sits the Poolbeg Lighthouse, one of the most distinctive landmarks in Dublin. The original lighthouse was built back in 1767 and was operated using candlelight for almost 20 years. The stocky, bright red lighthouse that we see today was redesigned and rebuilt in 1820. Why is the Poolbeg Lighthouse painted red? Well it's because it's used to indicate 'port side' for ships entering Dublin Bay There are two popular walking routes along the Great South Wall. The Poolbeg Lighthouse walk length is 3.5km for the shorter route which starts from the parking area right at the wall itself and takes under 1 hour, while the longer trail begins in Sandymount Strand and takes 2-3 hours at a leisurely pace. #asmr #dublin #walking Music Life Is by Scott Buckley | / scottbuckley Creative Commons / Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) https://creativecommons.org/licenses/... ☕ Buy me a coffee https://www.buymeacoffee.com/thehikin...
